Information about Doncaster Council’s Compassionate Approach to Weight Management
What is a compassionate approach to weight management?
Weight is a complex issue. We cannot solve it by only telling people to move more and eat better or by putting everyone on a diet. As well as our individual biology, genetics and behaviour, there are many more factors that affect our weight. For example, how much money we have, where we live, our culture and our family.
We want to take a different approach. We want to stop blaming individuals and claiming the problem is simply lack of knowledge or willpower. We will support people, value and accept them, and work hard to make their lives fairer.

Self-compassion is a mindful awareness of oneself, which involves understanding and treating oneself kindly at all times even during challenging times. A compassionate approach aims at incorporating mindfulness during the weight management journey and being kind, accepting, and understanding to thoughts and feelings that arise.
In this person-centred compassionate approach, we create awareness of the various determinants of weight and provide educational support to bring about long-term sustainable lifestyle changes.
