Montagu Community Diagnostic Centre celebrates one year of Endoscopy service

The Montagu Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), based at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its Endoscopy Service, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to critical diagnostic care for communities across South Yorkshire and the Dearne Valley.

Since its launch in November 2023, the CDC Endoscopy Service has delivered nearly 2,200 procedures, playing a vital role in diagnosing and treating conditions early. Patients have benefited from reduced waiting times, currently averaging just seven to 14 days for appointments, and streamlined care processes, including receiving results and treatment plans on the same day as their procedures, helping to alleviate patient anxiety and support quicker recovery.

The service’s location and accessibility have greatly benefited patients. Situated on a major bus route and offering ample on-site parking, the hospital is further supported by a free shuttle service between Doncaster and Montagu hospitals. These features, combined with its welcoming environment, have been widely appreciated by patients and staff in recent surveys.

Lead Nurse for Endoscopy at Montagu CDC, Debi Oxley, reflected on the service’s impact. “We’re thrilled to celebrate the first anniversary of our Endoscopy Service. These diagnostic tests are incredibly important—they allow us to identify issues early, improving health outcomes and quality of life for people in our communities. We’re looking forward to continuing this service and expanding to meet the needs of even more patients.”

For many, particularly those living in the Dearne Valley, the CDC’s localised services have removed the need to travel long distances for diagnostic tests, making appointments easier to attend and less disruptive to daily routines.

Since its opening, the CDC has supported over 90,000 additional appointments for communities across Doncaster and Bassetlaw and recently extended its reach to Rotherham and Sheffield. Its role in reducing pressures on acute hospital services has been critical, enabling more complex procedures to be prioritised elsewhere within the Trust.

The CDC has also expanded its diagnostic testing capabilities to include dermoscopy and oral facial maxillary surgery, with fibroscan and bowel screening set to launch in early 2025. The Imaging Suite which will form part of the Montagu CDC is also nearing completion and will be operational by spring, providing patients with even more accessible, high-quality care.

Educational initiatives within the Montagu CDC are also helping to shape the future of healthcare in the region.

In collaboration with the Yorkshire Endoscopy Training Academy (YETA), the Centre plans to offer training sessions to develop advanced skills in endoscopic procedures, ensuring local clinicians are equipped to deliver exceptional care.

Patients have consistently praised the CDC for its convenience, fast access to appointments, and compassionate staff. The ability to stay local for procedures has made a real difference, helping people avoid lengthy hospital visits and unnecessary travel.

Debi continues: “What we’re doing here at Montagu CDC is so much more than just offering procedures. It’s about providing a service that patients can trust, in a place that’s easy to reach and welcoming. Knowing we’re making a difference, from helping people get the answers they need quickly to supporting their ongoing care, is incredibly rewarding. This is a testament to the dedication and compassion of our entire team – here’s to many more years of success.”
