Our Trust

We are an acute NHS Foundation Trust and teaching hospital, serving over 440,000 people across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, and surrounding areas. Through our main hospitals—Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital, and Montagu Hospital—as well as smaller clinics like those Retford Hospital, Sandringham Road Health Centre and the Flying Scotsman in Doncaster – we provide high-quality healthcare services.

As a teaching hospital, we work closely with local universities to develop future healthcare professionals and drive research and innovation. Our strong partnerships enable us to deliver seamless, person-centred care, and we are home to one of the region’s busiest emergency services. Proudly, we were among the first 10 NHS trusts to achieve Foundation Trust status in 2004.

Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI): A leading acute hospital with over 500 beds, DRI features a 24-hour Emergency Department, a designated trauma unit, and comprehensive district general hospital services. In addition to inpatient, day case, diagnostic, and outpatient care, DRI offers specialist services such as vascular surgery.

Bassetlaw Hospital (BH), Worksop: With more than 170 beds, BH provides a 24-hour Emergency Department alongside the full spectrum of district general hospital services. Key specialties include a dedicated breast care unit and renal dialysis, supported by well-established inpatient, day case, and outpatient facilities.

Montagu Hospital (MH), Mexborough:
Focusing on rehabilitation, Montagu Hospital is a non-acute facility with over 50 inpatient beds designed to support patients on their recovery journey. It houses a nurse-led minor injuries unit (open 9am to 9pm), a day surgery unit, renal dialysis, a chronic pain management unit, and a wide range of outpatient clinics. Additionally, Montagu is home to our Rehabilitation Centre, Clinical Simulation Centre, and serves as the base for our abdominal aortic aneurysm screening programme.

Our pay structure explained

Within our Trust, colleagues are paid on the 25th of each month—or slightly earlier if that date falls on a weekend or bank holiday. Most NHS employees follow the national Agenda for Change pay scale, which features defined pay bands and progression steps. For example, Band 3 starts at £24,071 per year, rising to £25,674 after two years, with annual increases often negotiated nationally.

All colleagues, regardless of age, are automatically enrolled in the 2015 NHS Pension Scheme. Although opting out is possible, this means that a small percentage of your monthly earnings contributes towards your retirement pension.

Additionally, depending on your role, you may have opportunities to work extra hours or shifts, often compensated at enhanced rates for unsociable work patterns through NHS Professionals.

Our leave policy

Annual leave is calculated on a financial year basis (April 1 to March 31). For full-time colleagues (working 37.5 hours per week), this starts at 27 days of leave plus eight public holidays (this may slightly change depending on the year). With five years’ service, your entitlement increases to 29 days (and public holidays), and after 10 years, it rises to 33 days (and public holidays). Part-time staff receive a pro-rata allocation, and any extra hours worked via our NHS Professionals bank accrue additional leave that is paid out monetarily.

We also offer comprehensive sick pay and maternity pay policies. Our sick pay scheme ensures that you receive full pay for the initial period of sickness absence, transitioning to statutory sick pay as per NHS guidelines. For maternity leave, we provide robust support that combines statutory maternity pay with enhanced benefits, helping you to manage this important life event with confidence and security.
