DBTH statement regarding recent events

A message from our Board of Directors to all colleagues

Dear colleagues,

We know many of you have been deeply troubled by the tragic attack in Southport and are rightly appalled by the recent disturbances across the country, especially those closer to home in Wath-Upon-Dearne in Rotherham.

As a Trust our duty is to provide care and treatment to everyone attending our services, and we are incredibly proud of how our colleagues fulfil this commitment day in and day out. However, it is equally important to ensure a safe environment for our teams, both in the hospital and out in the community.

The NHS thrives thanks to its rich heritage and legacy of diversity, and we want to affirm that the actions of a few thuggish individuals over the weekend do not reflect the values and views of the majority. These actions are also contrary to our deeply-held values as a Trust.

Our colleagues, whoever you are, and wherever you are from, make Team DBTH what it is. You are valued, cherished, and most definitely welcome.

We believe that the vast majority of those we serve share this view. However, we wish to reaffirm that the safety of our colleagues must be a priority.

We have zero tolerance to aggression, violence, or hate speech towards any colleague and are committed to being an anti-racist organisation and will continue to work towards creating a workplace where everyone feels safe and respected.

We also work closely with SABA (our security partners) and South Yorkshire and East Midlands Police and have colleagues who already use body cameras which record incidents which may occur. It is therefore crucial that any incidents of abuse or violence are reported so that appropriate actions can be taken.

Support is available if you need it. If you have any concerns, please speak to your line-manager, Freedom to Speak Up Guardians, or your Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead.

During this time of heightened tensions and rising temperatures, we need cool words and calm heads to prevail. We urge all colleagues to look out for each other and, as always, treat one another with respect, dignity and kindness.

We are one Team DBTH.

Best regards,
The Board of Directors
