Critical Care

We have two Critical Care Units at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital, which look after patients who are very ill and need close care.

Visiting / opening times

  • Visiting (mornings) 10:30 AM 11:30 AM
  • Visiting (afternoons) 02:30 PM 07:00 PM

Both of the units can provide treatment and monitoring for Level 3 and Level 2 patients (which means those needing intensive care and those needing high dependency care).

It is important to identify and treat critically-ill patients as early as possible in their illness. Both hospitals have set up Critical Care Outreach Teams to help ensure that patients are identified, treated, and, if required, admitted to a critical care unit in a timely manner.

Patients on the units will be looked after closely by our team and may be connected to equipment to help monitor their health and support their bodily functions until they recover.

If you or your relative has been cared for in one of our Critical Care Units and discharged to a general ward they will usually have a follow up from a member of Intensive Care staff.

Whilst these units do have designated visiting hours, exceptions can be made for patients receiving end of life care or patients with learning disabilities.

Critical Care Follow-up Clinic

Many survivors of critical illness often suffer with health and social problems with a difficult recovery period.

We recognise that the usual hospital and GP systems may not always understand the challenges that you are facing. This clinic will provide you and your family an opportunity to discuss your experience with us and we will hopefully be able to answer any questions that you have about your illness or hospital stay. It also offers us an opportunity to check that you are continuing to make good progress with your recovery.

Why do I have an appointment for the Critical Care Follow-up Clinic?

You have been invited to the critical care follow-up clinic because you were a patient on either Doncaster Critical Care unit or Bassetlaw ITU and spent more than two-three days on the unit. It has now been several months after you were discharged home.

What will happen during the appointment?

You will have a 30 minute appointment slot with a critical care consultant, followed by a 30 minute appointment with a rehabilitation coordinator, straight after the first appointment. Ongoing referrals may be made to other specialities if they are needed.

Where will the appointment take place?

The appointment will take place in Outpatients 1 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Please check in with the main reception desk in outpatients when you arrive.

Can I discuss the appointment with someone?

Yes. If you want to discuss the appointment with someone, please call the rehab coordinator on 07483 985119 or 01302 644427. If needed, we can make adaptations to accommodate you and your family.

What if I don’t want an appointment?

Please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer a slot to someone else. Please cancel by calling 01302 642022, or email dbth.rehabdcc@nhs.net
